Calls to Surrey Heartlands Maternity Advice Line continue to increase. The Advice Line has now been operating for six months and over that time has taken nearly 21,000 calls. In the week of 1 October 2018 alone, the Advice Line took 960 calls.
The Pregnancy Advice Line is part of the national NHS Better Births plan to transform maternity services for pregnant women and families with new born babies and offering personalised care.
Surrey Heartlands is one of the first areas in the country to introduce this initiative which covers all aspects of the maternity pathway giving pregnant women, and the families of new born babies a better package of care, more choice and easier access to midwives and other health professionals.
As well as providing information and support during pregnancy, the midwives at the Advice Line are able to take calls about newborn issues such as feeding and sleeping.
The Advice Line number is: 0300 123 5473. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Based with SECAmb’s call handlers at Crawley, the Advice Line recently hosted visits from other NHS organisations interested to learn from the innovation, which is having a positive impact on pregnant women. There are also significant benefits for the NHS system, such as fewer ambulance despatches and less calls to maternity units.
