With a repertoire ranging from traditional African folk songs to a specially written anthem for the NHS, a total of 14 choirs from across Surrey Heartlands raised the spirits and tugged at the heartstrings of more than 400 people at Guildford’s G Live in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS.

The event also raised £2000 for The Fountain Centre, a charity for cancer patients, their families and carers located in the St Luke’s cancer unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.

The event was hosted by Surrey Heartlands Senior Responsible Officer Dr Claire Fuller. She also introduced guest of honour Peter Martin, the Chairman of Surrey County Council.

“Judging by the standing ovations for the singers, it was clear that the audience really enjoyed the performances; and throughout there was a sense of the esteem in which the NHS is held by staff and members of the public alike. On top of all that, through the enormous generosity of the audience, the event has also raised £2000 for The Fountain Centre.

“The charity manages 1500 – 2000 appointments per month but there is still only one full-time member of staff. The Fountain Centre has over 100 volunteers. The majority are qualified complementary therapists and counsellors. And their team of administrative volunteers makes sure the Centre runs smoothly,” said Dr Fuller.

The event‘s grand finale saw all the singers on stage together. The choirs that took part are:

  • Surrey County Council Chorus – including members of the Chairman’s Choir
  • Stoughton Hearts and Voices Community choir, Woking Carers Choir and Oakleaf Sing for Health Choir
  • Whole notes and High Notes Adult SEND Choirs
  • Motivation by Music choirs – MbM Gospel Choir, ToC Voices, Parkinsong Voices and Living Room Session Singers
  • Royal Surrey County Hospital Choir
  • Epsom & St Helier Hospitals Choir
  • Surrey Downs CCG Choir and individual members
